Johnny Jolly of Green Bay Packers arrested on another drug charge
HOUSTON -- Suspended Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly was jailed Monday after his third drug arrest in three years.JollyJolly was charged Saturday with possession of a compound containing codeine. He also was charged with tampering with evidence for attempting to conceal the substance from investigators, according to records.A Harris County sheriff's spokeswoman said no attorney was listed for Jolly and that a bond had not been set.He was held in the Harris County Jail. Jolly grew up in Houston, still lives in the area and attended Texas A&M University.Jolly was arrested with two others during a traffic stop at 1:55 a.m. Saturday. Deputies said they pulled him over after Jolly was seen throwing a bag out a window. The bag wasn't recovered but during the stop Jolly dumped a cup believed to contain codeine on the floorboard. Officers also recovered two bottles believed to contain codeine.Jolly was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2006 draft. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound lineman started all 16 games for Green Bay in 2008 and '09 but he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in July 2010 and did not play for the Packers last year during their Super Bowl-winning season. In April, Jolly pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge and was sentenced to probation after striking the deal with prosecutors that wiped out a similar charge from March and spared him any time in prison unless he stumbled again.Jolly had faced up to 20 years in prison if he had been convicted of possessing at least 200 grams of codeine, a controlled substance. That arrest came outside a Houston club three years ago.NFC North blogESPN's Kevin Seifert writes about all things NFC North in his division blog.NFL Nation blogThe plea agreement called for five years of deferred adjudication, a form of probation that allowed the conviction to be removed from his record if he stayed out of trouble.State District Judge Denise Bradley also ordered Jolly to undergo drug treatment at an inpatient facility for 90 days, barred him from going to bars or nightclubs and ordered him not to drink or use drugs while on probation. She also warned Jolly that if he violated any terms of his probation, she'd send him to prison. The 2008 drug charge came after police said they found cups containing a codeine mixture in Jolly's car after he was arrested in the parking lot of a Houston club.Last March, Jolly was arrested and charged again after a traffic stop. Police said they found a bottle containing 600 grams of codeine under a passenger seat and another bottle containing an unidentified substance.

Jon Greenberg - Chicago Bears return man Devin Hester a genuine genius Chicago

A game which saw Devin Hester set an NFL record and Matt Forte run for a career high.Tags: Countdown Daily, Alex Loeb, Cris CarterLAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Devin Hester didn't plan his celebration Sunday. He's not that type of guy."I don't sit at home and think about what dance I'm doing in the end zone," said the Chicago Bears return man, who had "Any" stitched on the back of his left cleat and "Time" put on the right. After all these years of watching Hester run, it's easy to believe him. He runs on instinct, and he does it better than anyone who has ever played the game. He's the Barry Sanders of returns. In that sense, I'm pretty sure Hester is a genius, but I'm not sure which kind. I researched genius -- OK, I quickly Googled it -- and I've narrowed it down to "bodily-kinesthetic" genius (i.e. a gifted athlete) or a spatial genius (someone with the ability to recognize their relationship with space). He's probably both.Whatever the designation, Hester's innate ability to not only run fast but to find seams and holes and change speeds and directions is certainly unique, and it paid off once again Sunday, as he set the NFL record for punt-return touchdowns at 11, while adding to his all-purpose record at 15. In the Bears' 34-29 win over the Carolina Panthers, he returned a punt 69 yards for a score just one possession after returning a kickoff 73 yards to set up a Matt Forte touchdown. He knew he had a chance because the punter, Jason Barker, mishit it.[+] EnlargeDennis Wierzbicki/US PresswireThe Bears' Devin Hester set an NFL record with his 69-yard punt return for a touchdown on Sunday."It was like baseball, he pitched it right down the middle," Hester said. "He gave me great field position to go either way. I can set the defense up, stare one way and go the other way."Hester's kick return, which ended with the always disappointing kicker-push-out-of-bounds tackle, started nine yards deep in the end zone. Hester said he's been instructed by his coaches to take everything out of the end zone. But once his (really outdated) personal anthem "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" winds down, he hears a clock ticking in his head."It's a time thing," he said Sunday. "You have a clock in your head. Anything under four seconds is a good opportunity to bring it out of the end zone, regardless of how deep the ball is kicked. Sometimes you get line drives that go nine yards deep in the end zone, but it's 3.5 seconds. It lets you know guys don't have time to get down there fast enough, so you have time to bring it out of the end zone."Hester has arguably the best special teams coach in the league in Dave Toub (Hester calls him "Coach Dave" and raves about him and his blockers), but he said Monday he was also inspired by an article about Brian Mitchell, in which the ace returner lamented that he didn't really learn the intricacies of position until the end of his career."It let me know to look at how the blocking scheme is designed," he said. "Reading that article, I know I can improve my game while I'm still ahead."I had pretty much assumed Hester had already set all the return records there were to be set -- I remember him crying after setting the all-purpose return record in Minnesota last year -- but he knew better. That's why, about 10 yards from the end zone, he decided to do a somersault. Then he did three, earning him a flag. It was pure exuberance. Nothing phony or contrived. But excessive celebration is a no-no in the No Fun League, and tongue-cluckers can obsess over the relative selfishness of a move. I doubt the Bears are criticizing Hester right now, or ever. I know Hester gets criticized for not being the long-awaited breakout receiver -- he only has seven catches this season in a bad offense -- but we've seen how dangerous he can be when he has room to run after a catch. And as a returner, he is the embodiment of everything we love about an athlete. He is graceful and dominant, and aesthetically memorable. He is an entertainer. So is it fair to penalize him for celebrating? Yes, but only with a flag. And Hester cites the NFL's premier grump as agreeing."I think it's fair," he said. "At the end of the day I know I can't keep flipping like that. At the same time, you only get one opportunity in a lifetime to break a record. And I don't want to break the record and make it seem like it was an ordinary touchdown. More From ESPNChicagoCan't get enough Bears information? ESPNChicago has all the latest on the Monsters of the Midway. Blog"I seen Bill Belichick one day on TV saying, 'You should be happy when you score a touchdown. I want to see you celebrate.' I'm the type of player when I'm having fun, I'm playing better. When I play like a robot and I catch a pass and walk back to the huddle, I don't feed off that momentum. But when I go out and have fun and I show my true character, I make more plays. That's the type of player I am."Bears coach Lovie Smith might look taciturn and sound monotone, but he's been known to race down the sidelines during a big play. He is a players' coach for a reason, because he loves that type of enthusiasm -- although tempering it a bit for Marion Barber's failed backflip."I can be an expert since I've seen every return Devin has had around here," Smith said. "But normally you can tell when he's really feeling it that day. He felt pretty good right away and he's almost unstoppable when he starts off like that."For all the angst the Bears bring on a weekly basis, win or lose, there's always Hester, the somersaulting record-setting genius.Replica Donte Stallworth Jersey White, Premier Calvin Johnson Jersey Black, Replica Blaine Gabbert Jersey Green, Authentic John Abraham Jersey Black, Replica Calvin Johnson Jersey blue, Premier Donte Stallworth Jersey Orange, Detroit Lions John Abraham Jersey, Replica Donte Stallworth Jersey Orange, Cleveland Browns Donte Stallworth Authentic Jersey, Premier Blaine Gabbert Jersey White, Premier Calvin Johnson Jersey blue, Detroit Lions John Abraham Premier Jersey, Cleveland Browns Donte Stallworth Jersey, Cleveland Browns Donte Stallworth Replica Jersey, Reebok Donte Stallworth Jersey, John Abraham Jersey 55, Cleveland Browns Donte Stallworth Premier Jersey, Jacksonville Jaguars Blaine Gabbert Premier Jersey, Premier Donte Stallworth Jersey White, Jahvid Best Authentic Jersey, Jahvid Best Jersey Authentic, Premier Blaine Gabbert Jersey Green, Replica Calvin Johnson Jersey White, Jahvid Best Premier Jersey, Premier Calvin Johnson Jersey White, Jacksonville Jaguars Blaine Gabbert Jersey, Detroit Lions John Abraham Authentic Jersey, Detroit Lions John Abraham Replica Jersey, Authentic Blaine Gabbert Jersey White, Jahvid Best Jersey Premier, Authentic Calvin Johnson Jersey White, Premier John Abraham Jersey Red, NFL Donte Stallworth Jersey, Authentic Jahvid Best Jersey, Jacksonville Jaguars Blaine Gabbert Authentic Jersey, Authentic Blaine Gabbert Jersey Green, Replica Blaine Gabbert Jersey White, Premier John Abraham Jersey Black, Replica Calvin Johnson Jersey Black, Jacksonville Jaguars Blaine Gabbert Replica Jersey, Authentic John Abraham Jersey Red, Premier Jahvid Best Jersey, wholesale chanel jewelry

Instead of blaming the New York Jets' coach for the latest loss, as he did last week, he went after Santonio Holmes, Vladimir Ducasse, offensive-line coach Bill Callahan and the team's personnel department. The Jets' legendary quarterback was critical of Holmes, who called out the offensive line and Mark Sanchez after the team's 34-17 loss Sunday night to the Baltimore Ravens. Namath said Holmes' comments could rip apart the locker room."That was a mistake, it surely was," Namath said Monday afternoon on ESPN New York 1050's "The Michael Kay Show." "For Holmes, as a captain, to go outside, to the media, and start pointing fingers. ... I mean, he's right about the ball getting out late to him (on the interception), and he's right about the offensive line, but that can create a problem in the locker room. ... That divisiveness can bury a team. They've got to correct that right away."Kay: Joe Namath - 10/3 Jets legend Joe Namath joins "The Michael Kay Show" with some poignant statements about the Jets' offensive line, draft selections and about postgame comments made by Santonio Holmes. More Podcasts After the game, Holmes said the problem "starts up front with the big guys," adding that Sanchez "has to do a better job of making reads and getting the ball where he needs to, so his playmakers can make plays." He said Sanchez made a late throw on Lardarius Webb's interception, which was returned 73 yards for a touchdown.Namath took issue with the decision to bench rookie center Colin Baxter for three series in the second quarter, putting the seldom-used Ducasse at left guard and moving left guard Matt Slauson to center. Broadway Joe said the Jets "panicked a little bit," saying that Baxter shouldn't have been blamed for the two fumbled snaps.Without naming names, Namath ripped the personnel department for using a second-round pick on Ducasse, who has been a disappointment. He said the front office has failed to provide quality depth on the offensive line, which took a hit with the loss of All-Pro center Nick Mangold (sprained ankle)."Right now, it's scary," Namath said of the line. "There's no depth, no quality depth. Putting Ducasse in the game, and moving Slauson over in the game, was a real reach, man. You get to look at these players every day in practice. I know coach Bill Callahan ... is a heck of a coach, but come on, who are we trying to convince that these players are quality?"Week 5: Jets at PatriotsGang Green is slumping. Up next? The rival Patriots. Jets Center Blog "I'm not sure what's going on there," said Namath, continuing his rant. "We picked some poor players and we're not owning up to it. That's what it amounts to. You've got guys on the roster who have been picked and you keep trying to say, 'OK, they're going to work out.' Well, guess what? We tried that with (Vernon) Gholston and it didn't work out."You have to (say), 'Hey, I made a bad pick, a bad selection,' and move on. The Jets didn't do that and it's a little late for the season to get it righted."Said Slauson about Namath's criticism: "We don't care one bit what Joe Namath has to say. He means nothing to us."Namath refused to write off the season, claiming the Jets still are in the hunt at 2-2. But he didn't sound optimistic about the upcoming game, saying, "It looks like things are going to be very difficult going into New England next week."The Hall-of-Fame quarterback defended Sanchez, saying Sunday night wasn't his fault."There isn't a quarterback playing this game who is going to be big time if he doesn't have help on that line of scrimmage," Namath said. TMQ says NFL comebacks aren't because losing team "lost the lead"
Kurt Snibbe/ESPN So far the season is a fabulous one if you like comebacks. On Sunday, the Detroit Lions came back from down 27-3 to the Dallas Cowboys, and the San Francisco 49ers came back from down 23-3 to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Jersey/A Giants came back from a 27-17 deficit with five minutes remaining, and the Cincinnati Bengals came back from a 17-3 margin at halftime. This, following a week in which the Buffalo Bills came back from a 21-point deficit to the mighty New England Patriots, and Detroit came back from a 20-point halftime deficit. Sunday made the Lions the first NFL team ever to rally from deficits of 20 points or more in consecutive weeks.Comebacks are sheer excitement. But please don't say they happen because the vanquished team "blew the lead." A football game lasts 60 minutes. Who's ahead early, and by how much, is irrelevant to the outcome. All that matters is who's ahead on the final play.Saying a team that lost after mounting a nice margin "blew the lead" is among the dumbest clichs in sports, failing to grant fair notice to the comeback side. Just because you're ahead early, even if by 20 points, does not confer some kind of mystical right to victory. Being ahead by a big margin certainly doesn't mean you are the better team! The assumption seems to be that if a team jumps to a big lead, then it deserves to win. The team that plays the best overall deserves to win. In every one of these recent NFL instances -- or many other cases, such as Alabama losing to Auburn last season after taking a 24-0 lead -- the team that "blew" the lead was outplayed, and outcoached, overall by the victor. The loser didn't blow the game, the victor won.Plus bear in mind -- often when a team jumps to a big lead, the opponent has just as much time available to reply. In the Detroit-Minnesota contest in Week 3, it took the Minnesota Vikings the first 30 minutes to build a 20-0 lead: meaning the Lions had 30 minutes to do something about it. Alabama was ahead 24-0 late in the second quarter; Auburn had as much time to come back as Alabama used to get ahead. Leads are not blown: victories are earned.TMQ CHEAT SHEETGregg Easterbrook on Cheerleader of the WeekWasteful Spending On BodyguardsGovernment-Funded Tevatron EndStats of the Week No. 1: The Lions and Niners trailed by a combined 50-6, and both won. Yet the Cleveland speed players were nowhere to be seen. Very, very sour.Sweet 'N' Sour Play of the Week: Devin Hester raced through the Carolina Panthers for his 11th punt return touchdown, setting the career record for most punt return touchdowns and for most touchdowns on kick returns of all types. Two NFL career records on the same play -- sweet. The Carolina Panthers did not punt away from Hester, rather they kicked directly toward him. Sour. The Cats have a guy who's not just the special teams coach, hisis special teams coordinator. He does nothing all year long but work on NFL special teams. Yet he didn't know it is not a good idea to punt the ball directly to the best kick returner ever.Sweet 'N' Sour Play No. 2: Leading 21-17 just before intermission, Green Bay had the ball on the Denver 17. The Packers lined up with double slots: two wide receivers on each side. Both slot men were fast players. Both slot men ran verticals straight to the end zone. Greg Jennings was uncovered, touchdown, and the defending champs never looked back. Sweet. On the play, Denver had one safety deep -- he couldn't help with both vertical routes, he had to choose one. Why did Denver field only one safety with the half almost over and Green Bay obviously throwing to the end zone? No Packers receivers were jammed at the line, either. All got the "free release" that receivers love. Throughout the contest, Denver did not jam receivers. It looked like a seven-on-seven league. Sour. Why did Green Bay have its offensive starters still on field with 41-17 lead with eight minutes remaining? The Packers also had defensive starters on the field till the final three minutes. This is tempting fate. [+] EnlargeGeoff Caddick/AFP/Getty ImagesWarning -- milk contains milk.Disclaimer of the Week: Reader Steve Seiferheld of Haddonfield, N.J., writes, "I drink Lactaid brand milk, whose formula is good for we who are lactose intolerant. On the packaging it says, 'Allergen warning: contains milk.' The name of the product is milk!" Declining Football IQ: Leading 10-0 with a few seconds remaining before intermission, the Texans blocked the Steelers' field goal attempt. The ball rolled in the classic "scoop and score" position. First low-IQ development: Houston's Jonathan Joseph, who picked up the blocked kick and had nothing but green grass ahead of him, began waiving the ball in the air at the Pittsburgh 40, and dance-strutting at the Pittsburgh 20. The football gods punish that sort of thing -- in this case, immediately. The second low-IQ development was that the Texans' Danieal Manning shoved the Steelers' holder in the back well behind the play. The penalty nullified the touchdown, and also ended the half. (The half can continue on a penalty against the defense; the half ends on a penalty against the team with the ball; Houston had possession when Manning shoved the holder.) Wasteful Spending on Bodyguards Watch: Reader Josh Prinsky of New York City notes that Alex Rodriguez got a police escort to Yankee Stadium. Reason? Traffic was bad. Prinsky writes, "The Yankee media relations guy who's quoted seems to think this is a positive story that would get them good press. How is this a valid way for an on-duty cop to spend time? If I was late to work, I couldn't flag down a policeman for an escort. Rodriguez is a private businessman engaged in a for-profit activity -- it's up to him to be on time, not up to public servants to clear his path. In New York, police are punished if they play catch with children at a housing project, which sounds like a wise use of law-enforcement resources. But stop traffic to provide an escort for a very rich man? No problem."[+] EnlargeAP Photo/Pablo Martinez MonsivaisA-Rod wondering what's keeping his taxpayer-funded police escort.Though Chicago, Cook County and Illinois all have serious budget problems, nevertheless there is $600,000 a year to provide round-the-clock bodyguards for the further reports that former Chicago mayor Richard Daley used taxpayer-funded bodyguards to pick up beer and clean his lake house, while Daley's daughters, who were not public officials, had bodyguards to get people out of their way when they went shopping. In addition to surrounding themselves with bodyguards, politicians now expect to travel in luxury cars, not mere sedans like taxpayers drive. The chairman of the Washington, D.C., city council ordered himself a loaded Lincoln Navigator with a $67,000 sticker price. His rationalization was that he needed an off-road-capable vehicle -- though the District of Columbia consists entirely of urban area. The luxury SUV gets only 15 miles per gallon, and the council chairman has a full-time driver. D.C. law prohibits public purchase of low-mileage vehicles, and stipulates that only the mayor may have a driver. The city council chairman simply instructed his staff to ignore the law. [+] EnlargeTim Boyle/Getty ImagesChicago City Hall, where there's always plenty of money for the personal luxury of public officials. This seems another example of TMQ's 内容ion that the reason fantastic sums are being spent by government, yet nothing's getting done, is that much of the money vanishes to corruption or to luxurious living for officials of both parties. TMQ believes plain old corruption, especially, is a bigger factor in runaway government spending than commonly understood.Colts Suddenly in the Andrew Luck Competition: As someone who touts undrafted, low-drafted or waived players, TMQ loved Monday Night Football's 59-yard touchdown screen pass from sixth-round choice Curtis Painter to sixth-round choice Pierre Garcon of Division III Mount Union, with undrafted tackle Jeffrey Linkenbach making the key pull block. But the essence of the contest was that fortune favors the bold. Trailing 17-10, City of Tampa faced fourth-and-1 on the Indianapolis 24 late in the third quarter. Though conversion on fourth-and-1 is 70 percent likely, most NFL coaches would launch a field goal in this situation, if only to deflect postgame criticism away from themselves. Raheem Morris -- who at age 35 is in his third year as an NFL head coach -- went for it, inserting running quarterback Josh Johnson to execute a college-style option run. Touchdown on the possession tied the score at 17. Then, leading 24-17 with 1:12 remaining, the Buccaneers faced fourth-and-1 on the Colts 41. Most NFL coaches would launch a punt in this situation, if only to deflect postgame criticism away from themselves. Morris went for it on a power run, and the rest was kneel-downs. Since the start of the 2010 season, the Bucs are 11-4 in games decided by a touchdown or less, a good sign of poise for a young team. Monday night's added passing yards mean the first four weeks of the 2011 were the four weeks of most passing yards in NFL annals. Sportsyak continues to claim this is caused by new rules emphasis on defensive backs not making deliberate helmet-to-helmet hits on receivers. If so, learn to live with it, because that's here to stay, and should be. But TMQ does not think the helmet-to-helmet crackdown accounts for increased passing yards. TMQ thinks blown coverages -- resulting from no offseason practices this year -- are the explanation. Sunday against Carolina, the Bears, a top defensive team, blew a coverage so badly that no one at all was guarding Steve Smith as he snagged a 53-yard catch. Concussion prevention did not cause the Bears to blow the coverage. TMQ thinks that no later than Thanksgiving, secondaries will jell and NFL passing numbers will return to the norm. Of course this column's motto is "All Predictions Wrong or Your Money Back." [+] EnlargeFermilab The Tevatron, possibly the only federal spending program that has ever ended.Scientists Discover That When You Slam Members of Congress Together, Money Is Released: TMQ for years has complained about high-energy particle accelerators, which make abstract scientific discoveries at great cost. Physics breakthroughs of the past, such as the Michelson-Morley experiment, were done at private expense. Contemporary accelerators, such as the Tevatron in Illinois and the Large Hadron Collider in Europe, involve very large amounts of public subsidies, and essentially have become employment programs for physicists and their postdocs. The accelerators produce fascinating results, but have never found any information of tangible value to taxpayers.Last week the Tevatron shut down after 24 years of operation, a rare example of a government-funded project that actually ended. But Fermilab, where the Tevatron is based, remains open and continues to employ about 2,000 people. You might think that wth the national debt reaching crisis proportions, abstract research into the nature of subatomic particles would be considered a luxury. Here, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, who's been making windy promises about cutting the national debt at some unspecified time in the future, demanded that Fermilab's $400 million annual budget not be touched. "We need to invest in crucial research that fuels American innovation," Durbin said. Fermilab has absolutely nothing to do with economic innovation -- the facility only studies the internal structure of subatomic particles.Durbin simply wants to keep an Illinois boondoggle rolling in borrowed money. The trouble is that all senators and representatives want to keep their local boondoggles rolling in borrowed money. Congress is supposed to seek the greater good; instead its members fight to preserve boondoggles. That's why the monster debt continues to grow. Right now the South Dakota congressional delegation is pushing the latest physics boondoggle, conversion of an old mine into a detector for neutrinos, at a cost of $2 billion or more.Authentic Calvin Johnson Jersey, Philip Rivers Jersey Blue, Jaguars Jersey Shop Online, John Abraham Jersey Authentic, Premier Calvin Johnson Jersey, Customized Jacksonville Jaguars Jersey, wholesale bvlgari jewelry, Authentic John Abraham Jersey, Premier Jamaal Anderson Jersey Red, Calvin Johnson Replica Jersey, Calvin Johnson Jersey Premier, John Abraham Jersey Premier, Blaine Gabbert Authentic Jersey, Peyton Hillis Jersey Black , Authentic Philip Rivers Jersey White, John Abraham Premier Jersey, Customized Jaguars Jersey, custom Jaguars Jersey, Calvin Johnson Authentic Jersey, Calvin Johnson Jersey Replica, NFL Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys, Official Peyton Hillis Jersey, Authentic Philip Rivers Jersey Blue, Authentic Blaine Gabbert Jersey, custom Jacksonville Jaguars Jersey, John Abraham Authentic Jersey, Premier Blaine Gabbert Jersey, Premier John Abraham Jersey, Replica Calvin Johnson Jersey, Calvin Johnson Jersey Authentic, Authentic Peyton Hillis Jersey Black , Blaine Gabbert Jersey Authentic, Replica Jamaal Anderson Jersey Red, Cleveland Browns Peyton Hillis Jersey, Blaine Gabbert Premier Jersey, Calvin Johnson Premier Jersey, Peyton Hillis Jersey orange, Blaine Gabbert Jersey Premier, Authentic Peyton Hillis Jersey orange

More Podcasts "I'm going to be honest, I was not surprised," Favre, who won his only Super Bowl in 1997, said during the interview. "The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn't do it sooner."Favre said he realized all along how good a quarterback Rodgers could be, and had high expectations for him in this position -- in the limelight, winning his first Super Bowl in January. But he also intimated that Rodgers' rise into elite status has been aided by a supporting cast that was better than what he when he was in Green Bay."He's very bright and he got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right," Favre said of Rodgers, who is among the league leaders this season with 12 touchdown passes and 1,325 yards passing. "And so he just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he's a good player. I don't think there's any pressure on him now, the talent around him is even better than when I was there."Favre has said previously that it wasn't his job to mentor his understudies, and had acknowledged some friction with Rodgers, but also that their relationship improved.Seifert: Favre Being FavreBrett Favre's response was pretty neutral on Aaron Rodgers. But there were some very "Favre-like" passive shots in there as well, ESPN's Kevin Seifert writes. Blog"Aaron had a chance ... even though the last couple years it's seemed like he's almost a rookie, he's been around a while," Favre said on the radio interview. "And I'd like to think that he watched, he learned, and then when he got a chance to play, he brought in his ability -- which is obviously very good or they wouldn't have drafted him in the first round."Rodgers bided his time, then took over the starting job from Favre four years ago -- three years after being drafted with the 24th overall pick in 2005. After winning over skeptical fans and media opposed to his starting, he is now as revered in Green Bay as the guy who wore No. 4 there."I'm really kind of surprised it took him so long," Favre said. "In the early part of last season, it hadn't quite clicked yet, and I didn't know it would. I just kind of figured when they hit their stride, they're going to be hard to beat. And that's what happened."On Wednesday, 790 The Zone released a statement saying Favre's comments were taken out of context by the national media.Authentic Maurice Jones-Drew Jersey, Colt McCoy Jersey Premier , Maurice Jones-Drew Jersey Premier , Colt McCoy Authentic Jersey, Roddy White Replica Jersey, Roddy White Jersey Authentic , Matthew Stafford Jersey Premier , Authentic Roddy White Jersey White, Roddy White Jersey White, Official Matthew Stafford Jersey, Authentic Roddy White Jersey, Replica Roddy White Jersey, Replica Matthew Stafford Jersey, Maurice Jones-Drew Authentic Jersey, Roddy White Jersey Premier , Authentic Matthew Stafford Jersey, Matthew Stafford Replica Jersey, Authentic Colt McCoy Jersey, Roddy White Jersey Black , Premier Roddy White Jersey, Colt McCoy Jersey Authentic , Premier Colt McCoy Jersey, Roddy White Premier Jersey, Colt McCoy Premier Jersey, Roddy White Jersey Red, Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford Jersey, Matthew Stafford Jersey Replica , Authentic Roddy White Jersey Red, Matthew Stafford Jersey Authentic , Premier Maurice Jones-Drew Jersey, Authentic Roddy White Jersey Black , Roddy White Jersey Replica , Premier Matthew Stafford Jersey, Maurice Jones-Drew Jersey Authentic , replica chanel jewelry, Matthew Stafford Premier Jersey, Maurice Jones-Drew Premier Jersey, Roddy White Authentic Jersey, Matthew Stafford Authentic Jersey

The NFL playoffs are about to get underway and its interesting that most of the early match ups in the playoffs are going to be repeats of the last week's games in the NFL. In this article, I thought it would be good to highlight the teams that made it to the playoffs in the AFC. These teams are the Indianapolis Colts, the San Diego Chargers, the New England Patriots, the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the New York Jets. The big front runners in the division are the San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts. Both teams have byes in the first week and are coming off great seasons with all star quarterbacks. Peyton Manning of the Colts has had a great year and has a tremendous receiving corps with Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie all having a great season. The Chargers have a similar strong roster with Phillip Rivers and the likes of Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson. Both teams have decent running efforts with Joseph Addai and Ladanian Tomlinson respectively, but they are clearly passing teams today. In the lesser set of teams, it will be interesting to see what the others will come up with. The Ravens have a solid team with a nice mix of strong passing and running. Ray Rice is a Pro Bowl running back and Joe Flacco has had a great year with Derrick Mason. The team has a few holes in their defensive corps but overall they've put up a strong effort. It'll be interesting to see how they fare against the New England Patriots. With Tom Brady, the Patriots have a strong throwing game, but they will have an interesting battle now that star receiver Wes Welker is out. While the game previously looked in the bag for the Patriots, they will have to depend on their running game to step up and make the difference. On the other side, the Bengals and Jets likely seemed like a no-contest win for the Bengals only a few weeks ago. But after taking down the Colts and the Bengals in a trouncing, the Jets have shown their hungry. Yes, the two teams played down some of their best players. But still, the New York Jets have a top defense, and one of the best running games in the NFL. The Bengals aren't a laughing matter either with Cedric Benson putting up a strong rushing game and a fierce defense that is known to play rough. All in all, it's an interesting set of teams that could all throw in a good shot at making it to the Super Bowl. The next few weeks will show who has it all.

A recent conversation about Brett Favre joining the Vikings led me to consider the implications of corporate leadership and a company hiring a CEO superstar, such as Brett Favre. I was debating with a friend in the private equity business whether we would make the decision to sign Favre if we owned the Minnesota Vikings. As a retained executive recruiter, this discussion led me to consider whether I would recommend a Brett Favre CEO to a client.Brett Favre recently changed his mind about retirement (for the second time) and signed with his former rival, the Minnesota Vikings, sparking mixed emotions among NFL fans. Whether you like him or not, the 39-year-old legendary quarterback has had a Hall of Fame career. The Vikings have signed him to a two-year, $25 million contract in order to upgrade the QB position, bring corporate leadership to the team and deliver a Super Bowl victory to the Viking's.Critics and fans have responded with fervor. Despite the media circus surrounding the news, the August 21st edition of USA Today reported that fans have purchased more than 4,000 season tickets, 14,000 individual game tickets and 4,000 Favre jerseys within 72 hours of his signing. However, critics have questioned Favre's abilities given his injuries; others question whether he wanted to play this season, but didn't want to attend training camp. Still others are critical of Favre, and that his retirement flip-flops have become tiresome. From the perspective of a retained executive recruiter focused on corporate leadership, the drama of hiring of Favre creates an interesting discussion about corporate leadership decisions within a company. Let's explore the benefits that a Brett Favre can bring to corporate leadership.Accelerate Growth:Let's assume a client's company is similar to the Viking's organization in regard to their 2008 performance. They maintained their performance - at times on the verge of tremendous success - but are looking to enhance and accelerate growth. The following outlines the state of the Vikings in 2008.In 2008, the Minnesota Vikings' offense was:1.5th in rushing offense but 28th in passing attempts per game and2.25th in total yards and 25th in passing completionsThe Vikings defense was:1.7th in giving up the fewest number of yards per play and 2.6th in terms of giving up the fewest total yards per gameThe Vikings delivered a strong defensive performance and a few offensive players performed well individually. However, the Vikings could not pull it all together. The Viking's organizational metrics and results for make it obvious that the team's missing piece was corporate leadership and competence at the sport's most critical position - quarterback. In business terms, the Vikings had employees in place, but were missing the corporate leadership to call and execute a successful business plan. If a business continually performs, but is consistently missing on one or two metrics, it is missing big opportunities. Some companies have a strong product or service and are able to expand the business at a steady pace; however, they are missing out on achieving a large, positive growth curve. These organizations may employ strong functional executives and solid financial systems, IT systems and operational processes, yet they lack the corporate leadership to pull it all together and execute a business growth plan.Organizational TurnaroundIn assessing whether or not to hire a Brett Favre as CEO for a company in crisis management, it is important to consider a candidate's track record. With CEOs as well as quarterbacks, prior success is a strong indicator for future performance.Let's consider Favre's background: he owns records for completions, completion percentage, interceptions, sacks, touchdowns, yards passing, pass attempts, 3 NFL MVPs and starts, among others. In 2008, Favre had a 65.7 percent completion rate, which was the second-best completion rate of his career. His best season for completion rate was just one year earlier, the 2007 season. Favre is second in NFL history with "come-from-behind" fourth-quarter or overtime victories, second only to John Elway's 47 victories. High completion percentages and the ability to pull through in the clutch are key attributes a company needs from corporate leadership.Favre's past successes - coupled with his performance in the last two years - indicate he has what it takes for a corporate leadership role. Additionally, the Vikings have the team members to support Favre and take some of the pressure off of him, including Adrian Peterson, the Viking's star running back.In business, a Favre CEO has played through almost every conceivable situation he could encounter. If a CEO knows the business, the key drivers, the right playmakers and how to execute the business plan, he is a great choice.A Sound SolutionIf a company is in need of dramatic change or accelerated growth, is the best choice someone untested with promising credentials or someone with a proven track record and veteran corporate leadership? In the case of the Vikings, their choice is right on target with their goal: Brett Favre was a good hire. While a thorough assessment would need to be completed, I would recommend to my private equity friend that he and a company's board of directors consider a Brett Favre CEO for both a corporate turnaround and accelerated growth situation.
Madden 2010 is a somewhat changed game from previous editions. Because of this, you are forced to make changes to make sure you account for the differences in gameplay. While not dramatic, there are some tiny modifiers you need to adjust for for to make sure you stay on top of your video games skills. The wildcat offense. While huge in the new state of the NFL, the wildcat offense in Madden still needs some changes. For some reason you can not really scramble with your QB, so the ultimate efficiency of this is not fully realized. When using the scheme, only pick it if you desire an extra blocker for a predesigned play.Passing long. Throwing far is not as effective in Madden, and for some reason, it is more of a challenge to complete a long throw. Precision throws are difficult to come by, and your quarterbacks far throw stat is a vital element of it. This means that you can often clog the line of scrimmage and not have to fret the deep throw, something that is not sensible in real life.Field goal difficulty. FGs are more difficult than ever, making it so you have to move your controlling stick straight up and down or the field goal will go far right or left. Due to this you have to pay attention for every kick or risk a poor punt, field goal or kickoff. The kicking game can cause a immense change in field position and shift your game from a win to a small loss.

The world of medicine is full of controversies. Most center around the issue of paying for medical care, but a new issue is starting to rear up and demand we take notice. That issue is the growing prevalence of staph infections. You've seen the movies and read the books. You know, the ones talking about bioterrorism. The plot always turns on some nasty bug that has horrific symptoms. Sometimes they are simply made up while other times a real bug like Ebola are exaggerated.Well, the good news is bioterrorism has not reared its ugly head so far, but an equally devastating bio hazard is developing right under our noses. Staph infections are on a meteoric rise and it is getting harder and harder to hide the fact these issues are arising."Staph" is short for a bacteria known as Staphylococcus. There are many versions of the bacteria, but most are just referred to generally by the Staph moniker. A more deadly version is known as MRSA.Staph has been a common medical problem for years, but it has always been treatable through the use of antibiotics. Well, that is no longer necessarily the case. Instead, staph is now breeding strains that are resistant to antibiotic treatments. From time to time, you will hear about a case where staph goes wild and people are hospitalized. Know, however, it is starting to become a more high profile problem. We need only look to the NFL to see examples. The Cleveland Browns either are extremely unlucky or have a problem with the medical treatments. The team may have had no less than five to seven players suffer from staph infections after undergoing medical treatments. Kellen Winslow, Jr., their starting tight end, was recently hospitalized with the infection. All hell broke loose when he stated as much against the alleged wishes of the team. The New England Patriots have been a dominant team in the NFL for the last six years or so. The primary reason is their stellar quarterback Tom Brady. When he suffered a major knee injury in the first game of the season, their season went down hill quickly. Well, things may be getting worse. Brady suffered from a staph infection after his surgery and has needed two additional surgeries to try to clear it out. There is no indication of whether the surgeries have been successful.Bioterrorism is a fascinating and dramatic subject, but it would appear that an equally serious bio threat is already here. If NFL players are having major problems with staph infections during their treatments, those of us that cannot afford the absolute best care should probably be a bit worried.
Control of ones "Bankroll" is paramount to success. You can pick 80% winners and still go broke if you don't know how to play responsibly. There are many theories as to how this is best done. Even the best, most informed Players have bad losing streaks but they know how to handle them. This is normally where the novice gets knocked out of the box. He will chase his losses by throwing good money after bad. We all know what to do with a winning streak, right? Wrong. People tend to either press too hard trying to win too much or they cut back trying to protect their winnings. A money management system as described below is regarded as the best way to properly operate one's Bankroll. It protects against big losing streaks and presses "just enough" in the winning streaks to maximize one's profit. Here's the system:1. Divide your Bankroll by the number of sports you are playing simultaneously. College Football, NFL, Baseball, College Basketball and the NBA all get their own Bankroll.2. Your average wager should be between 3% and 8% of the Bankroll, with 5% being an average play. When a "Top Play" is found, wager between 9% and 12% of the Bankroll. If you find an opportunity that you feel "can't lose", wager 15% of the Bankroll.3. NEVER wager more than 15% on any game!4. NEVER wager more than 33% of your Bankroll at a given time. For example, don't make ten 5% plays all at once. This exposes 50% of your Bankroll to the Odds maker and eventually, he'll give you a licking! Be conservative.5. After each "session" or set of games, determine your won/loss and add/deduct from your Bankroll. This sets you up for the next session. If you won, your Bankroll goes up and you are "allowed" to play more by virtue of the percentages of a larger Bankroll. If you begin to lose, your Bankroll goes down, thus your plays decrease in size, thereby limiting your risk. Bottom line here is that when you are winning, the system "presses it up!" When you're losing, you are "forced" to cut back. By the same token, if you are winning in College Football, and losing in the NFL, this system will automatically adjust your plays to be larger in the Colleges and smaller in the NFL. Keep the Bankrolls separated!6. If you choose to use PSP, play about 4% on his Regular Plays and about 8% on his Top Plays7. If you choose to play games on your own, by virtue of the fact that they are on TV, or because you are emotionally tied to a particular team etc., consider playing around 2%, or better yet, set up your own "TV Bankroll" or "Loveroll" as in the case of "I just LOVE the 49'ers"8. Be humble. Greed kills the Bankroll!

I have been a fan of Phil Mickelson's for a very long time. He's one of those golfers that I've pulled for for years and have always assumed he was a nice guy considering how polite and nice he seems on television. Back in 2004, I was at the Masters on Sunday when he won his first Masters title. My wife and I were positioned to the left of the tee on #10, and after Phil teed off, he walked down the left side of the fairway passing directly by us.We both smiled and gave him a "Go Phil", and he did something that many professional athletes don't do, he smiled, tipped his hat and said, "Thank you and thanks for coming out." That may not sound like much, but try that same scenario with many other professional athletes while they're in the heat of the battle, and you're more likely to get ignored, glared at, or at best, a quick nod. But, one nice "thank you" does not necessarily mean that the real Phil Mickelson is a nice guy. It means he's polite and respects the fact that the fans are as much a part of a golf tournament as he is.What does make him a nice guy is a story I read in a recent edition of Golf World magazine. The title of the article was, "Conrad Dobler's Favorite Golfer." Unless you are a die-hard historian of professional football, you probably have never heard of Dobler... Neither had I until I read this article. Conrad was once called the "dirtiest player in the NFL".Because NFL players of the distant past did not make that much money, and the NFL's disability plan doesn't amount to much, Conrad lives a nice, but not too extravagant lifestyle considering he's had numerous surgeries on both knees. But, Conrad's entire life changed back on July 4, 2001. He and his wife Joy and their six children were relaxing while waiting for friends to come over for the holiday. His wife Joy was in their hammock and accidentally fell out of the hammock and couldn't feel anything. She's been a quadriplegic ever since. After numerous surgeries, doctor visits, etc., Conrad has had to downsize and sell almost all of his assets to keep the family afloat while paying for Joy's rehabilitation.Enter Phil Mickelson. Phil's lawyer, Glenn Cohen, called Conrad up one day and told him that Phil had become aware of his situation and wanted to pay for his daughter Holli's college education. Conrad couldn't believe it because he had never met Phil and still hasn't to this day. Conrad asked Cohen why Phil was doing this, and his response was, "Because he can."Phil does stay in touch with Holli who is now a sophomore at Miami of Ohio. She waits tables and has a heavy load of classes and currently has a 3.8 GPA. The first year, Phil sent $20,000, and he has promised cost of living increases every year promising $22,000 and then $24,000.This random act of kindness by Phil has changed the lives of more than just Holli. It has made Conrad a better person, and it's given Joy the will to walk again. She's already made great strides and hopes to one day get out of the wheelchair for good. Phil has invited the entire family to the Memorial Tournament in May, and the family can't wait to meet him in person. As Joy says, "If there's anything he's missing in his life, it's a set of wings. He's an angel. And if I can when I see him for the first time, I'm going to go up and give him a big hug."BECAUSE HE CAN! That is the real Phil Mickelson. To me, this story embodies what it means to be successful. Being successful means having the ability to help others "because you can." There are so many people who could help others, but they choose not to. I'd like to challenge you to look for areas in your everyday life where you can perform a random act of kindness. You'll be surprised how many situations come up where you can help....Good luck and make it a great day!
A botched 19-yard-field-goal attempt on fourth down with only 79 seconds left caused the Dallas Cowboys to be one point short and one yard short of a first down as the Seattle Seahawks hung on to advance in the 2006 NFC playoffs, beating the Cowboys 21-20 at home in Seattle. While there was blame enough to pass around for the loss in the wild-card game, the final mistake came when "rookie" quarterback Tony Romo lost control of the ball on Martin Gramatica's 19-yard-field-goal attempt.Romo, the holder, caught the ball cleanly but bobbled the ball when placing it down for Gramatica's attempt. Romo tried to scamper into the end zone on the play but was stopped short by Jordan Babineaux's game-saving tackle at the 2-yard line, one yard short of a first down.Untested quarterbacks who become starters historically screw up in big games, and Romo did not disappoint. He did not make any excuses for costing Dallas the victory and advancement in the playoff game, and Romo deserves credit for shouldering the blame. He was the holder on kicks for the Cowboys last year before replacing Drew Bledsoe this year. He blossomed into a Pro Bowl pick by winning five of his first six starts and turning the Dallas season around at that point. Romo's fast start and big statistics fell apart quickly as the season progressed. Many money players (including myself) bet Seattle to win behind Matt Hasselbeck's experience and Romo's inexperience in the playoffs.True to form, Hasselbeck was 18-of-36 for 240 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, both of which resulted in Dallas field goals. Matt Hasselbeck was a Pro Bowl pick last year but was bothered by injuries and a weaker offensive line this year.Romo was 17-of-29 for 189 yards and a touchdown and no turnovers, but all it took was the botched kick attempt to mar his effort.Pushing aside all statistics, the ball clearly bounced right for Seattle and wrong for Dallas, but that is why we play the game. As a Seattle Seahawk fan, it almost goes without saying that I love first year starting quarterbacks playing for the opposing team. Two other big plays helped Seattle advance in the playoffs. The first big play happened when trailing 20-13 after failing on a fourth-and-goal play with 6:40 left in the game. The Seahawks started their comeback with two points on a safety when defensive back Kelly Jennings forced Dallas receiver Terry Glenn to fumble the ball into the end zone when the Cowboys took over deep in their own territory. The ball shot out of Glenn's arms and took one bounce into the end zone as three Seattle defenders converged on the opportunity for the Seahawk defense to score in the Cowboy's end zone.Linebacker Lofa Tatupu, an All Pro rookie last year, dove for the ball to keep it from going out of bounds and tipped it back into play then safety Michael Boulware recovered it for what appeared to be a touchdown.A replay showed Tatupu was out of bounds when the ball was tipped inbounds, so the Seahawks were awarded a safety and the Cowboys lost possession of the ball. The second big play came when Seattle received the ball on a free kick following the safety. The Seahawks took the winning lead on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Matt Hasselbeck to Jerramy Stevens.Stevens arguably had the best day of his 5-year career, catching five passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, his first touchdown being a 15-yarder to give Seattle a 13-10 lead in the third quarter. The Seahawks could not have won without Stevens because Seattle's go-to wide receiver Darrell Jackson (D-Jack) and D. J. Hackett both left the game with injuries.Dallas was not to be denied as Romo drove the Cowboys right back down the field and into position for the win when a pass to Jason Witten was initially ruled a first down. A replay showed the Cowboys were short. It looked as if Dallas Coach Bill Parcells was tempted to go for it on fourth-and-1 as he left his offense on the field until Seattle called for a timeout. Then Parcells sent in Gramatica for the ill-fated field goal attempt. This playoff game was as exciting as any wild-card game ever played.Miles Austin, an undrafted rookie, had a 93-yard kickoff return for Dallas that became the first kickoff return for a touchdown in the Cowboys playoff history. Austin's electrifying run put Dallas up 17-13 in the third quarter only 11 seconds after the Seahawks had gone ahead.Defending on the play were such no-names as John Howell, Rich Gardner, Ben Joppru, Oliver Celestin, Marquis Weeks and Lance Laury.Seattle lost starters Kelly Herndon and Jimmy Williams with season-ending injuries against Tampa Bay a week before the game. Starter Marcus Trufant, one of the best tacklers at cornerback in the NFL, suffered a high ankle strain earlier in the year.Thrust into the spotlight to defend against Terrell Owens (arguably the best current receiver in the NFL) and Terry Glenn (arguably the fastest receiver in the NFL) was rookie Kelly Jennings (who caused the fumble that resulted in Seattle's safety), safety-turned-cornerback Jordan Babineaux (who covered Terrell Owens and made the game-saving tackle on Tony Romo) and nickel back Pete Hunter (who was out of football a week prior and was working as a loan officer in Dallas). If you are not impressed by the performance of Jennings, Babineaux and Hunter, you are most certainly a Dallas homer. The Seahawk defensive secondary that had been decimated going into the playoff game helped hold the Cowboys to a season-low 14 first downs, its second-lowest total yards at 284, its second-lowest net yards passing at 168 and only 23% conversions on third downs.A lot of Seahawks played tough on defense and the defensive secondary, which figured to get a lesson in what not to do against Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, held its own like the Seattle Seahawks NFC conference championship team of a year ago that went to the Super Bowl.Is there unfinished business in Seattle? Yes, there is. Next stop is in Chicago against the Bears, the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The Seahawks come in as a 9-point underdog. The Bears humiliated Seattle 37-6 earlier in the season on their home turf, but as a betting man, I like Seattle to upset the Bears and continue on their run to another Super Bowl appearance. The Seahawks earlier defeat by the Bears was played with a banged-up offensive line, Shaun Alexander was unable to play because he had a cracked bone in his left foot and Michael Boulware left the game with a concussion.Let the Seahawks try again, this time healthier, stronger, hungrier and more focused on the prize that eluded them last year when Pittsburgh beat them 21-10 to win Super Bowl 40 (XL).Copyright © 2007 Ed Bagley

If you're struggling to find the perfect gift for the teenage boy on your Christmas list, here are some gift ideas to get you started.PaintballWhat is the natural instinct that drives teenage boys to want to hunt each other down? Whatever it is, you can feed this instinct safely by giving a gift of paintball guns and equipment. There are complete kits you can purchase at retail stores for reasonable prices.Car AccessoriesA gift of car accessories is a sure win if the teenage boy on your list is old enough to drive and has his own car. Even for the teenage boy who is not driving yet, this could be a great gift. Young guys dream of owning their first set of wheels. A gift of car wax and other cleaning supplies allow him to pamper his new toy. Seat covers or other decorative accessories let him give his car a personal touch.Black Light LampBlack light lamps are back, and any teenage boy on your list is likely to want one. Get him one for his room and find out what glows in the dark. Many posters and other decorative accessories are available now that spring to life under a black light.Consumer Electronics Gift CertificateGadgets and entertainment equipment are always a hit with teenage boys. A gift certificate to a consumer electronics store will give him an excuse to check out all of the latest TVs, stereo equipment, and computers. This is also the place where he can find his favorite music and video games. If you don't have a suitable store in your area, the young guy on your list can do all his shopping there online.Team JerseyThe majority of teenage boys are into some sort of sport. Whether it is basketball, football, baseball, or NASCAR racing, he most likely has a favorite team or sports hero. Buy him a jersey from his team. Even better, find a jersey with the number of his favorite player. Authentic NFLJerseys are especially hot right now.JeansMost teenage boys wear jeans most of the time, which means they always need new ones. Just make sure you buy the style he likes. Some teenage boys like snug-fitting jeans, while others like their jeans baggy. Carpenter or painter jeans are also popular. Whatever the style, this is the "can't miss" gift, because there is no such thing as too many jeans.JewelryYes -- jewelry! Jewelry is becoming increasingly popular, in one form or another, among teenage guys. For rockers, tribal or beaded necklaces will be a hit. They might also like a stud or hoop earring. Preppy guys often like to wear fashionable rings or bracelets. If you aren't too sure about jewelry, try a watch. With such a wide variety of watch styles available, you'll be certain to find one to fit any teenage boy's taste.SnowboardChristmas is a great time for winter sports. This year might be the perfect opportunity for your teenager to get into snowboarding, and simple snowboards can be purchased at a relatively low price. The thrill of conquering a new challenge motivates many a teenage boy, and snowboarding will give him a way to release some energy and add excitement to the winter months.Video Game Magazine SubscriptionGenerally speaking, teenage boys are suckers for video games. If the guy on your list has a game system, such as X-Box, PlayStation, or Nintendo, you can get him a subscription to the corresponding magazine. He'll get inside information and screen shots from upcoming games, ratings of current games, and, best of all -- demo discs. These demo discs let him play portions of games before they even come out, which helps him decide what games he really likes and wants to buy.Portable MusicBoys love noise -- and their favorite kind is music. Whatever his music preferences, the teenage boy on your list is most likely to be passionate about his bands. With a portable player he can listen to his music anytime, anywhere, and you won't have to hear it.Mission AccomplishedHead out to the mall armed with the above list and a little shopping savvy, and you have a way better chance of finding the ideal gift. Soon he will be saying, "DUDE, that is so cool!"
Ness Notes (Jan 24)
As expected, Monday's NBA games couldn't match Sunday's offensive explosion. Monday's six-game card averaged 184.7 PPG, with the night's highest scoring game being Denver's 107-101 win over Toronto. That fell woefully short of Seattle's 152-149 double-overtime win over Phoenix, the NBA's highest-scoring game in 11 years.Tracy McGrady had a 41-point game in Houston's 97-80 win over Milwaukee, the night's best scoring effort. Unfortunately, his 41 points left T-Mac a mere 40 points shy of Kobe's 81 on Sunday, the second-highest scoring outburst in NBA history! My free play for Tuesday is in college hoops, Ohio over Akron at 7:00 ET. I'm on a 12-5-1 70.5% CBB run since Jan 14 after last night's win on Pitt. Tuesday, I feature not one but TWO 20* plays in college hoops. I also have a 15* in the NBA, looking to bounce back from Golden State's total collapse Monday!Tuesday night's schedule sees the league's two-best teams in action. Detroit (33-5) is at Minnesota where the Pistons are a five-point choice with a total of 175. The Spurs, who are tied with the Mavericks for the league's second-best mark, are at home against the Bobcats. San Antonio is 19-3 at home but just 9-13 ATS, while the Bobcats own the league's worst overall record (11-30) and are 4-18 on the road but 14-7-1 ATS. The Spurs are favored by 15 with a total of 186 1/2.Memphis is in Miami, a rematch of an Opening Night game (11/2) in which the Heat won in Memphis, 97-78. Miami is favored by 6 1/2 points with a total of 184. Phoenix is in Orlando and this game offers a stark contrast. Both teams are coming off OT games in their last outings. However, while Orlando beat Sacramento on Saturday in OT 83-78, Phoenix lost its OT game in double-OT, by the score of 152-149! Phoenix, 11-4 SU and ATS since Christmas, is a 5 1/2-point favorite over Orlando (total is 209 1/2), which enters on a six-game home winning streak. The college basketball schedule is topped by two TV doubleheaders. On ESPN, it's Kentucky at Auburn at 7:00 ET (the Wildcats are favored by 3 1/2 points with a total of 127) and Indiana at Iowa at 9:00 ET (Hawkeyes are favored by 2 1/2 points with a total of 129). On ESPNU at 7:00 ET, Georgetown, which just beat Duke on Saturday and is ranked in the top-25 (21) for the first time since 12/31/01, is at Notre Dame (Irish are favored by two points with a total of 137 1/2). In the second game (9:00 ET), it's Miami-Fla at Virginia (the Cavs are a 2 1/2-point choice with a total of 129.)U Conn took over the No.1 spot from Duke (had been No. 1 since the preseason) in the latest AP poll. It's the sixth time the Huskies have been ranked No. 1 and the school's longest stay at the top was for 10 weeks back in 1998-99. Duke fell to No.2, while former No. 2 Florida dropped to No. 5. Memphis is No. 3 and Texas (which won its ninth straight last night 80-46 over Okla St) is No. 4. Pittsburgh, which joined Duke and Florida on Saturday by losing for the first time this year (but won 80-67 last night over Syracuse), dropped from No. 9 to No. 12.Super Bowl Update: It looks as if the early money is all on Pittsburgh, as 'FOURS' are popping up in many sports books (in Las Vegas and off-shore). The Steelers are the NINTH non-division winner to make the Super Bowl. There have been seven previous wild card teams to make it this far since the 1970 merger plus there was the 1969 KC Chiefs. The Chiefs finished second in the Western Division to the Oakland Raiders that season but because the AFL (in the final year before the merger) wanted to match the NFL's playoff structure (NFL had a four-division league while the AFL had just two divisions), the league made a one-year playoff change. The division runners-up would meet the division winners from the opposite division (East winner playing West runner-up and West winner playing East runner-up).The Chiefs beat the Jets 13-6 in New York and then in the AFC title game, beat the Raiders (who had beaten the Chiefs BOTH times in the regular season while finishing 12-1-1- to KCs' 11-3!) in Oakland, 17-7. The Chiefs then went on to upset the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, 23-7!FOUR of the previous eight 'wild card' Super Bowl teams (including KC in that group) have won the Super Bowl. The Raiders in 1980 became the first "official" wild card team to do it when they beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XV, with the 1997 Broncos (beat Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXII) and the 2000 Ravens (beat the NY Giants in Super Bowl XXXV) joining the Chiefs and Raiders. If the 2005 Steelers are to join that group, they'll have to do it as the first-ever wild card team to be FAVORED (more NFL stuff tomorrow).Ness Notes is available Monday through Friday by 1:00 ET.
