Manager Brad Mills admitted there was a temptation to start Downs, who had four hits in his last five at-bats after breaking an 0-for-24 drought Sunday.                 The versatile infielder started at first base on Monday in place of Carlos Lee, who was back in the lineup Tuesday. Downs, who is hitting .203 as a starter, is tied for the Major League lead with eight pinch-hit RBIs, including two home runs.                 "There's no doubt that's a temptation," Mills said. "But at the same we don't want to sit Carlos out too much. He has swung the bat pretty well, as well, and Carlos is our starter and at second base we have [Jose] Altuve and [Jimmy] Paredes at third. I feel better with [Angel] Sanchez and [Clint] Barmes at shortstop. Downs could move over there, but I don't know as a starter."                 Lee is a career .400 hitter against D-backs starter Jason Marquis. Barmes, who sat in place of Sanchez at shortstop on Tuesday, is 0-for-11 in his career against Marquis. Jason Michaels is 8-for-13 in his career against the right-hander, but he wasn't in the lineup.                 Mills likes what Downs can bring off the bench.                 "He does such a good job swinging the bat off the bench, and if he gets one or two starts a week to keep that bat strong and fresh, that's probably the best way to go about it," he said.                                               Worth noting                • Outfielder Luis Durango cleared waivers Tuesday and has been outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was up with the Astros briefly earlier this month.

   ARLINGTON -- Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak took batting practice again on Tuesday, hoping to return from a left thumb injury he sustained on Aug. 2 against Oakland, but he remained out of the starting lineup against the Rangers.Smoak hit left-handed in the batting cages Tuesday, as he did Monday, but he did not hit from the right side in his Robin Roberts Throwback Jersey initial round of swings. "He goes up there ready to hit -- he hunts the baseball. I think he sees the ball very well, and he's able to do some damage, too. He's been doing a nice job facing some pretty good pitching."Carp, who also had a 22-game hit streak at Triple-A Tacoma this year, has improved each month of the season. He hit .200 with no home runs and no RBIs in 15 games in June, starting 11 of those contests. In 11 July games, all starts after being recalled from Tacoma on July 19, Carp hit .349 with two homers and nine RBIs.
